One moment

Which of you by being anxious can add one moment to his lifespan?Matthew 6:27

A plain question with a plain answer: none of you. Anxiety does no work. It changes nothing in the world; it only changes you, and for the worse. Thirty days in, you have some evidence of this. Meals you were anxious about not eating turned out to be unnecessary. Mornings you were anxious about getting up for became the best part of the day. The pattern is that the alarm was louder than the need, every time. Today, when the anxious thought arrives, ask it the question. Then let it go, and return to the word.

Today's practice

Keep a small tally today of anxious thoughts. For each, ask: did this add one moment to anything? Tonight, look at the tally without judgment.

The fast

Daily fast. Tomorrow begins the longest fast of the journey, thirty-six hours, if you choose it. Finish supper early and lightly. If you do not choose it, keep the sunset-to-sunset.

Kept on this device only.
