Turn around
The time is fulfilled, and God's Kingdom is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Good News.
The first word of his preaching was "repent," in Greek metanoia, which means not "feel guilty" but "change your mind," or better, "turn around." The kingdom is at hand, close enough to touch, and the only thing between you and it is the direction you are facing. Turn. That is the entire instruction. And it is repeated every time you notice you have wandered in the silence and come back to the word. Every return is a small repentance. You will do it a thousand times these forty days, and each one is the kingdom coming a little nearer.
Today's practice
Ten minutes of silence. Count your returns, not to judge but to see how many times a morning you turn around.
The fast
Nothing after supper. In the morning, wait an hour past your usual breakfast before eating. Notice the hunger; notice that it passes.
