Within
God's Kingdom is within you.
Begin with the founding sentence. Asked when the kingdom would come, Jesus answered where it already was: within you, among you, here. Not after you have improved or once you understand, but now, in the person reading this, before breakfast. The forty days are a slow removal of what stands between you and what is already the case. Today, nothing is required except to have heard it.
Today's practice
Sit for ten minutes in silence before you eat or look at a screen. Hold one word: within. When the mind wanders, return to it, gently. That is the whole of Day 1.
The fast
Tonight, finish supper and eat nothing after it. That is all. The daily fast begins in your sleep.
