The good part

Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.Luke 10:41–42

Martha is doing everything right. Someone has to make the meal. And Jesus does not tell her to stop; he tells her what she is, anxious and troubled about many things, and that her sister, sitting at his feet doing nothing useful, has chosen the one thing needed. This is the tension of every contemplative life. The work is real. The sitting looks like idleness. And the sitting is the one thing that will not be taken away. Halfway through the forty days: which have you been, mostly? Both are in you. Today, be Mary.

Today's practice

Leave something undone today, a task that could wait, and give its time to sitting at his feet instead. Notice the anxiety that rises. Sit through it.

The fast

Daily fast, Daniel table. Tomorrow is a half-day of silence; arrange it now.
