He was there alone
After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
He has just fed five thousand people. The crowd wants to make him king. And he sends everyone away, the crowd and the disciples both, and climbs a mountain to be alone until it is dark. Three weeks in, this is your mountain. A half-day of silence: no speech, no screen, no reading but the gospels, no sound but what is already there. It will feel like too much at first and then, somewhere in the afternoon, like the first real rest you have had in years. Feast this evening. Then the second half begins.
Today's practice
A half-day of silence: morning to mid-afternoon, or afternoon to bed. Sit twice. Walk once. Eat once, alone. Then, in the evening, feast with others.
