Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one: you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is like this: you shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.
As yourself
Asked for the greatest commandment, he gave two and called them one. Love of God and love of neighbor are not a hierarchy; they are a single motion seen from two sides. You cannot do one without the other, and the attempt to try is the source of most religious cruelty.
The hinge is "as yourself." Not more than yourself and not less. The contemplative reading is that the neighbor is not other than yourself: the same life looks out of their eyes, and love is simply the recognition of it. The practical reading is that you cannot pour from an empty cup. Both readings end in the same place: the wall between you and the person in front of you is thinner than you think.
Practice
With the next stranger you pass, silently say: "The same life." Don't force a feeling. Just say it, and see what your face does.
