But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you; that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
Sun on the just and the unjust
The reason he gives is the remarkable part. Love your enemies not because it is noble, or because it will change them, but because that is what God is like, and you are meant to resemble your parent. The sun does not check credentials before it rises. Neither does the rain.
Christ consciousness is, in one sense, exactly this: an awareness that has stopped sorting the world into deserving and undeserving, because the love that holds everything is prior to the sorting. When you pray for the person who wronged you, you are not doing them a favor. You are stepping out of a smaller mind into a larger one.
Practice
Name one person you resent. Once a day for a week, say their name and ask that good come to them. Notice how the request changes over the week, and how you do.
