The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds, but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.
The smallest seed
Jesus almost never describes the kingdom as large. It is a seed, a pinch of yeast, a coin lost in a house, a pearl. The scale of the beginning tells you nothing about the scale of the end. This is a mercy for anyone who has sat for ten minutes and felt nothing.
Ten minutes of stillness is a mustard seed. One skipped meal offered instead of endured is a mustard seed. One angry sentence not spoken. You will not see the tree. But the birds will come to it, and some of them will be people you never expected to shelter.
Practice
Choose the smallest practice you are certain you can keep (one breath prayer at a red light, one minute of silence before eating) and keep it without fail for seven days. Let it be small enough to be unbreakable.
