Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
Not as the world gives
Said the night before he died, to men who were about to watch it happen. So this peace cannot be the absence of trouble. It is something that exists alongside trouble, underneath it: a floor that holds when everything on top of it is breaking.
"Not as the world gives" is the key. The world gives peace conditionally: when the problem is solved, when the money comes, when the diagnosis is clear. His peace is given before any of that, and it is the peace the contemplatives find in stillness: a quiet that was there before the noise and will be there after. You do not manufacture it. You settle down into it.
Practice
In your sitting today, when a worry arises, don't resolve it. Ask instead: "Is there a peace underneath this?" Then wait, and feel for the floor.
