← Fasting & Simplicity
Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.
Not in abundance
Fasting from food is the first and most bodily form of a larger fast: from acquiring, from accumulating, from the constant low-grade reaching for more. Jesus seems to have owned almost nothing, and he was the freest person anyone had met.
The mind that wants more is the same mind that cannot sit still, and it is the same mind that eats when it is not hungry. Simplicity is a relief, not a moral achievement. Every unnecessary thing you stop reaching for returns a little attention to you, and attention is the currency of the kingdom.
Practice
Fast today from acquiring. Buy nothing that is not food. Notice each impulse to reach for more, and let it pass like a cloud.
