Not in abundance
Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man's life doesn't consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.
Fasting from food is the first and most bodily form of a larger fast: from acquiring, accumulating, the constant low reaching for more. Jesus seems to have owned almost nothing and to have been the freest person anyone had met. The mind that wants more is the same mind that cannot sit still and eats when it is not hungry. Simplicity is a relief, not a moral achievement. Every unnecessary thing you stop reaching for returns a little attention to you, and attention is the currency of the kingdom.
Today's practice
Choose one room, drawer, or folder, and empty it of what you do not use. Give the contents away. Notice the lightness; it is the same lightness as a fasting morning.
The fast
Daily fast, Daniel table. Sit fifteen minutes this morning instead of ten.
By the calendar, today is Day ?.
